I use Dr Bronner's and the instructions said use 2 squirts and a gallon of water, but that was way too diluted so I used a lot more, but definitely much less than 1:1 so no wonder it was too weak...I will add more and see how that works. I was buying another brand of liquid castile soap which was thicker and needed more diluting, but generally 1 part soap to 1 part water works well for me. I don't bother using distilled water, but then my tap water isn't too bad compared to some I've seen. If yours is quite hard I'd try using distilled or rainwater.
